What is gold wasser?

Goldwasser is a traditional German liqueur produced since the early 1600s in the Danzig/Gdansk region of Poland. It is made by blending neutral grain spirit, herbs, spices, and natural oils and then filtering the mixture through flakes of real gold, which gives it its distinctive appearance. The recipe is a closely guarded secret and is known by only a few select individuals. Goldwasser has a sweet, aromatic flavor, with the notes of cinnamon, anise, and cardamom. It is often enjoyed as a digestif or aperitif and is traditionally served chilled in a small glass. Goldwasser is also used in cocktails such as the "Gold Rush" and "Gilded Lily."
